FUN and light - hearted humor
At just 13, Burt began his professional career with “Soviet State Circus Company”, the largest circus organization in the world. Known for his innovative routines with clubs, rings, and custom-made “propellers,” Burt stood out from the start. Even his first costume—a striking design by famed fashion icon Valentin Yudashkin.
Born in 1975 into the legendary Russian circus family of Lidia and Leonid Ignatov, Burt seemed destined for the spotlight. His family’s circus history dates back to 1900, and by the age of 10, he was performing solo juggling acts in the arena.
“I was born in the circus,” Burt says. “It was so real, so natural, that the ‘normal’ world felt strange. Behind the curtains, I acted like an ordinary person, but onstage—I was home.”
Burt Blague, also known as Sergey Ignatov Jr, is a fourth-generation circus artist and first-generation American who has redefined the art of juggling and clowning. A two-time World Juggling Champion, Burt blends tradition with innovation, humor, and heart to captivate audiences worldwide.
In 1998, Disney invited Burt to create a one-man show for their Epcot Theme Park. The result was “Funny Sergio the Italian Juggler,” a comedic, family-friendly performance that quickly became a fan favorite. It was here that Sergey Ignatov transformed into Burt Blague, inspired by the first clown of Astley’s Circus and the French word “blague” (joke).
Over the next decade, Burt toured across North America, Europe, Japan, China and Latin America. Along the way, he continued his education, mastering tap dance and contemporary choreography, always striving to push the boundaries of his craft.
In 1998, a tap dance festival brought him to the United States, where he joined the National Circus Project as a teacher and performer. This marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in his career.

BIO

In 2016, Burt directed Let’s Go Show, a multi-genre circus production that toured Peru to rave reviews. The following year, he premiered “Cosmos” in Moscow, a whimsical show that tells the story of an alien (Burt Blague) using the universal languages of juggling, clowning, and dance.
Burt has always pushed boundaries, not just as a performer but also as a director and innovator. In 2010, he created 10 original clown acts for the Riga Circus in Latvia, later featured in the “Poekhali!” show. In 2015, he presented his second solo project under the same name, “Poekhali!” (meaning “Let’s Go!”).
Burt’s passion for blending art forms extended to symphonic performance as well. From 2007 to 2011, he toured with leading American orchestras in the “Symphony of the Americas” project. In 2008, he achieved another career milestone by winning his third World Juggling Championship in the Rings division.
In 2004, Burt returned to the competitive arena at the World Juggling Federation Championships in Las Vegas, winning two gold medals in the Rings division. Around the same time, he debuted “Ploskosti” (“Planes”), a deeply personal stage production about love and loneliness in the modern city, created in collaboration with designer Valentin Yudashkin and set designer Dmitriy Strizhov.
In 2024, Burt debuted his new show, B4, in the United States. This production blends modern clowning, stunning visual effects, and Burt’s signature juggling expertise into an immersive theatrical experience.
The couple’s passion for their craft extended to their family as well. Their son, Sergey Jr., began juggling at the age of seven, ensuring the continuation of this extraordinary circus dynasty.
The Ignatovs have performed on prestigious stages across the globe, from Argentina and Germany to Japan and Taiwan. Their career highlights include appearances at the World Festival of Youth in Havana, as well as successful tours in Italy and Cyprus. Their act is more than just a performance—it is a celebration of trust, connection, and the heights that dedication can achieve. Lidia and Leonid have proven that the true magic of the circus lies in its power to transcend boundaries and captivate audiences with a unique blend of elegance, precision, and daring.
In 1977, the duo made their debut at the Leningrad Circus, captivating audiences with their daring and elegance. Among their signature tricks are Lidia performing a one-handed handstand on Leonid’s forehead while he juggles five clubs, and an awe-inspiring moment where she balances on a perch atop Leonid’s forehead, spinning a hula hoop, while he juggles six rings. These jaw-dropping feats demonstrate their unparalleled mastery and artistic vision.
Leonid, born in Moscow in 1953, is the younger brother of renowned juggler Sergey Ignatov. Following in his brother’s footsteps, Leonid enrolled at the Russian State Circus School (GUTSEI), where he met Lidia, a naturally talented gymnast. Their strong connection, both personally and professionally, laid the foundation for their remarkable career. After the birth of their son, Sergey Jr., the couple focused their efforts on creating a groundbreaking act that would set them apart.
From the very beginning, the legendary juggling and acrobatic duo of Lidia and Leonid Ignatov have defied the limits of what is possible in the circus arena. Their act, which seamlessly blends breathtaking juggling with intricate acrobatics, is a masterclass in artistry, skill, and trust. Through their highly complex tricks and flawless execution, the duo has earned their place in history as one of the most extraordinary juggling acts of all time

ART OF JUGGLING

Burt Blague, two times World Champion in Juggling, offers engaging, hands-on workshops of juggling for all ages that inspire everyone to explore their potential while having fun.
Benefits of Juggling:
Since juggling requires a lot of concentration, it keeps your mind away from all other worries and tensions. That way it’s a great stress-buster.
Secondly, it helps develop self-esteem, especially among kids. When you do something out of the box, you develop a sense of feeling that you’re capable of doing things out of your comfort zone. And that is how juggling helps develop self-esteem.
And lastly, neuroscience studies suggest that juggling helps in keeping one’s brain alert.
Circus arts naturally captivate young audiences, and the thrill of trying out these skills motivates students to push their boundaries. The workshops strike a perfect challenge offering students a chance to develop patience, self-discipline, and effective practice habits in an enjoyable environment.
While juggling may appear to be simple entertainment, it is, in fact, a craft that demands exceptional skill, discipline, and countless hours of practice. Behind every awe-inspiring performance is a story of hard work, determination, and a commitment to mastering one of the most intricate
